The Sweetest Thing
The line "the sweetest Thing that ever grew" refers to Lucy's moor. But how interesting would it be if it referred to Lucy? This would suggest that she has possibly become apart of the moor (7). Calling her a "Thing," even though capitalized, could suggest that she is not quite human in her demeanor. In fact, it occurred to me briefly that Lucy may not even be a real girl, but a spirit or symbol of nature. If one reads the poem this way, it is indeed a very different poem altogether. Wordsworth's intense connection with nature suggests is driving this poem after all. But, seeing the main character as a little girl rather than a spirit is more emotional for the reader.
